ECONOMIC RESEARCH GROUP

MEETING

February 17, 2010

The group met for the first of our meetings to be held at the Crystal Springs Golf Course and was called to order by Activities Chairman Tom Keefer.

There were 36 members in attendance which was the largest number of men to attend since 2008. This confirmed our belief that the highway construction was interfering with members travel to the luncheon site. Tom congratulated Dale Schmidt on finding our new meeting location. After finding extra seating for some of the late comers luncheon commenced.

Tom Keefer introduced the speaker for this meeting who was none other than our own Econ Chairman Mort Levinson. Mort originally was an east-coast resident who grew up in the Boston and New Hampshire area and headed west to spend his freshman year at the University of Oklahoma with a football scholarship.

Mort then talked about what he did after he decided that as a 5 foot eight lineman he needed to reassess his future plans. To help in this decision process he needed time and space so he volunteered in Israel’s war of Independence in 1948. It turned out as the youngest volunteer and received an assignment to a half track squad patrolling an area near were his cousin lived. Since Mort was short on Hebrew and the cousin had no English it developed into a learning experience and a really close relationship. Not to leave you in doubt as to Mort’s final decision to his future he was graduated at Cal Poly in 1954 and entered  into a profession of selling Insurance with his brother until he retired.

Thank you Mort for a wonderful presentation of your life and career.

Our next meeting will be held on March 17, 2010 with a social time stating at 11:30 AM.

Our speaker will be Ted Taylor and his talk will cover an economic subject of interest to us and our government.

The meal selection will be Shrimp Louie or something to do with Corned Beef.

Call Bob Way if you haven't made a choice of meals at this time (945-7014).
