History:

Little Sir Ralph Gaines suggested in 1981 to the Executive Committee of Branch No. 1 to have an activity other than the General Luncheon Meeting, which he entitled “Investments and Economics Research”. There was sufficient favorable response to the suggestion by the Executive Committee, which justified a preliminary organizational meeting on June 15, 1981, which was held in the home of Robert Souter. Twelve members showed up for this meeting. There were several policies discussed and agreed to at this meeting. It was decided that the regular meetings would be held on the third Wednesday of each month, beginning in July of 1981. It was also decided that it would be discussion group and not an investment club. The original officers were Bob Souter, Chairman, Bob Spence, Vice Chairman, and Les Toler, Acting Secretary.

The first regular meeting of the Investment and Economics Research Group was held at the Bombay Bicycle and Riding Club in Burlingame on July 15, 1981. The topic of discussion at this meeting was “Interest Rates”. This activity is the first and oldest of all the activity groups of Damian Reynolds Branch Number 1.

At the meeting on January 20, 1982, Bob Souter was reelected Chairman, Lou Macomber, Vice Chairman, and Dan Wolfe, Secretary. It was agreed at this meeting to change the name of the Activity to “Economic Research Group” since there was no investing activity in the group, and the former title might be misleading.

At the meeting on January 18, 1984, Les Toler was elected Chairman, Bob Petrick, Vice Chairman, and George Durbin, Secretary-Treasurer. On February 15, 1984, the group moved to Woodlake Joe’s in San Mateo. Since the accommodations were larger, it was decided to expand the membership to those who were on waiting list. On September 18, 1984, the group moved to Salvatore’s Restaurant in San Carlos.

At the meeting on October 19, 1994, Jim McGill became the Chairman of the Economics Research Group. He held this position until January 15, 2003.

On January 16, 2002, the group began meeting at “The Iron Gate” in Belmont, after Salvatore’s Restaurant had notified the group that they were closing, as they had other plans for the property. After a few months, the group moved to “Dominic’s” at the Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo.

At the meeting on January 15, 2003, Charlie Sweeney became the Chairman of the  Economics Research Group, Jim Zylla, Secretary, and Bob Way, Treasurer. At the meeting on March 24, 2004, Bill Schinagl became the Chairman of the Economics Research Group. On January 19, 2004, George Riley took over as Chairman for the Economics Research Group. George Riley retired as Chairman on November 20, 2007, and Tom Keefer assumed the Chairmanship for 2008. On November 18, 2009, Morton Levinson became the Chairman for 2010. The rest of the officers remained the same. On January 20, 2010, the group began meeting at Crystal Springs Golf Course off of Highway 280 in San Mateo.
