SIR’S BRANCH #1 GARDENING GROUP

AGENDA 1/26/08

January 26, 2008 at Lembright’s

Planning for 2008 and Winter Jobs yet to do with an Emphasis on Planting Bare-root Plants, Pruning and Spraying

  1. Next meeting 4th Thursday of the month, February 28, 2008, at the Lembright’s

  2. Refreshments this meeting-Don Brozzo, Bob Way & John Goodier. February meeting- Arne Pedersen-cookies, Ed Tuft-ice cream; or the equivalent.

  3. Finalize orders for Aspen & alfalfa meal. I will pick them up at Kathie’s, and have them at our Feb. 28 meeting. Don’t pay me now. (Check with each present, consider number of rose bushes-estimates are OK

  4. Programs for the start of 2008.

A. Possible speakers: I only have 1 potential speaker to choose from for early 2006. One possibility is a friend of mine, Dr. Bob Raabe, retired plant pathologist, UC Berkeley, and now a leader in a general agricultural program in Berkeley. Also I would like you to consider later in the year a possible speaker specializing in one of the following plants, Azaleas, Camellias, Fuchsias, Geraniums, Begonias, etc. Also, I need your help in looking for possible speakers on one of these subjects. John: Who do you think would be good.

B. Possible field trips: Goldsmith Seeds in Gilroy, when ?

C. Would you like any “hands on” sessions?

D.Subject matter: Possibly a review of the contents of the Sunset Western Garden Book, 2007edition, California Master Gardener Handbook, University of California, and the Ortho’s Home Gardener’s Problem Solver.

5. Garden clinic & other miscellany. Gardening comments, good and bad experiences, etc. from all present.

6. Did anyone bring samples of problems in their garden? HWL-my gardener pruned them.

I would have pruned them less severely, had I had time. I have had 2 very time consuming jobs this month: the furnace in this home after 52 years was beyond repair and had to be replaced. In the middle of this the water heater went out.

7. For your assistance in looking up information, I will continue to have the following reference books available each month for your use; A. California Master Gardener Handbook, University of California, B. Sunset Western Garden Book, 2007 edition, and Ortho’s Home Gardener’s Problem Solver.

8. Any specific subject that you would like information on? If so, after the meeting you might look them up in the above one or more of the 3 publications.

9. I encourage you to determine which varieties of perennials, roses, camellias, etc. you want to plant during the next 4 months. Review your catalogues and make a list to select from, particularly those plants available in the nurseries you patronize. Several times I found myself at a nursery ready to purchase or order perennials without such a list and relying on my memory for choices, or looking at pictures they have available. Pictures in catalogues can be very misleading. Much of the time, some of the plants I purchased or ordered were very disappointing.

10. John’s session of what you should do. His recommendations are directed to our immediate environment of San Mateo county and surrounding areas. I would appreciate it if you would E-mail me notes of particular interest that John shared with us.

11. Pass out “February in Your Garden”- the table of contents should identify the sections that are of particular interest to you highlight things you would like to do as we review it. Then review it one more time before you put it away. Otherwise you will probably forget some key things you want to do. Also, I would suggest you file these in a 3-ring binder for reference. You might also include a sheet where you can write your own notes by months, of things quite pertinent as ongoing references of your gardening needs. Also, you might follow the suggestion of starting a garden diary.
