SIR’S BRANCH #1 GARDENING GROUP

AGENDA 8/30/07

August 30, 2007 at Lembright’s

Work you need to consider this summer, 2007

  1. Next meeting- 4th Thursday of the month, September 27 at the Lembright’s (Helga’s home)

  2. Refreshments. Next meeting here ??______________

  3. Probable field trips: Nurserymen’s Exchange, Half Moon Bay-October

  4. Garden clinic & other miscellany. Gardening comments, good and bad experiences, etc. from all present.

6. Did anyone bring samples of problems in their garden? HWL- performance of 2 Ingrid Bergman roses,1 out front-SF Chronicle article-outstanding growth of a bare-root rose which in Jan 07 was placed into a 5 gallon container at Wegman’s, I purchased it and then planted in front in March for the SF Chronicle article. It has bloomed twice since March, now there is about 30?? buds in various stages, and is now preparing for its 3rd bloom. I have a second Ingrid Bergman rose that I purchased around March 04 in a 5 gallon container from Carlmont Nursery in Belmont. Initially it was watered in the 5 gallon container here at Helga’s and in January of this year moved to Millbrae at Fran’s and planted into the soil in March this year using the same soil mix as used here. The growth and extensive bloom of this Ingrid Bergman rose at Fran’s has been outstanding, I have never observed such spectacular growth and bloom on any of over a hundred roses that I have planted in Burlingame and Millbrae. However, I must say that this is the first year that I planted my roses in a mixture of the ‘native’ soil and 1 or more professional compost mixes. I plan to present an explanation of this at our next meeting in September.

7. Do any of you have experience with the web for garden articles?

8. I would appreciate if someone would go to www.fishock.com and printout the brochures that this company has for electric fences. One unit is for restricting dogs, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, possums, etc., and a second unit for restricting cattle, deer, and other large animals.

9. Show the group the small animal unit, and the brochure for restricting cattle, horses, deer, etc., for over a mile of wire.

10. For your assistance in looking up information, I will have the following reference books available each month for your use; A. California Master Gardener Handbook, University of California, B. Sunset Western Garden Book-note January 2007 revision, and C. Ortho’s Home Gardener’s Problem Solver.

11. Any specific subject that you would like information on? If so, after the meeting you might look it up in the above one or more of the 3 publications.

12. Review Sunset’s What to do in your garden-August (2007)

13. An initial discussion of restructuring our Garden Group for 2008: After my current and ongoing bout with Plasma cytoma, plus the fact that I will be 87 next month, has made me realize the urgent need for restructuring. One example of this is #7 above-- having someone obtain information off the interned as well as collecting literature from other sources. Also, if each of our members would pick up 2 copies of pamphlets of interest relative to gardening practices that they see in nurseries, etc. it would expand my (our) library of references. Gordon Lavering often gave me articles and Don Neuman brought me the garden section of the Mercury News. I only get the SF Chronicle, Sunset, and newsletters from Wegman’s and Carlmont Nurseries. Then if someone could scan these articles into their computer, they could E-mail them to me, to include into my computer library. In turn, I could incorporate them into monthly E-mail mailings for our group.

Another might be someone to arrange for speakers or field trips. In all cases, I could give some degree of assistance. Either we need to do something like this or decide when we will terminate our garden group.

14. Pass out ‘September in Your Garden’- highlight things you would like to do as we review it, and make a note of it in the Table of Contents for easy reference. Then when you are home, review the Table of Contents one more time before you put it away. Otherwise you will probably forget some key things you wanted to do. Also, I would suggest you file these in a 3-ring binder for reference. You might also include a sheet where you can write your own notes each month, of things quite pertinent as ongoing references of your gardening needs. If you haven’ already done so, you might follow the suggestion of starting a garden diary. to include in your notebook. After you have included an entire year in your notebook, you should have a rather complete garden book of your own.
